All of the big tech companies – Facebook, Google, Apple, Amazon and Twitter – are now acting as though they are too big to fail. The reality is that they all work together, and are much more powerful than any government or even the combined governments of earth.
It’s an uncomfortable situation.
It sparked a global outcry and sent users to rival apps Telegram and Signal, among others, prompting WhatsApp to delay the new policy launch to May and to clarify the update was focused on allowing users to message with businesses and would not affect personal conversations.
A lot of people switched to Telegram.
But Telegram is already in the process of being pressured off of Google and Apple app stores.
Furthermore, politicians that are funded by the big five tech companies are saying that all encrypted messengers are potential hotbeds of terrorist activity.
There isn’t any way out of any of this. The tech companies, like in any cyberpunk dystopian fiction, are now our overlords.
